The Early Days: Establishing a Niche
In 2019, Craig, with a love for BMX that spanned decades, started the shop with a vision: to provide a curated selection of bikes, parts, and accessories that would rekindle the love for old-school BMX among riders. This era saw a lot of BMX shops focused mainly on modern, high-performance bikes. But Craig’s Old School Bikes went against the grain by offering classic models, rare parts, and hard-to-find accessories that brought BMX fans back to the sport’s roots.
Starting as a small online store, the shop stocked vintage-inspired BMX bikes and specialized parts from top names in the industry, helping it quickly attract a niche market. Craig focused on sourcing items that were otherwise difficult to find, particularly those that evoked the style and flair of the 80s and 90s BMX scene. Word spread, and soon, collectors, racers, and everyday BMX enthusiasts began flocking to the site, not only for products but for a chance to connect with like-minded fans.
The Challenge of Growth and Expanding the Inventory
As the shop grew, so did the challenges. Sourcing vintage parts and old-school designs required connections and perseverance. Craig began building relationships with suppliers, collectors, and manufacturers who shared his passion for classic BMX. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic presented additional hurdles, with global supply chain issues and shipping delays impacting stock availability. But in the face of adversity, Craig’s Old School Bikes adapted by investing in online customer service and expanding its product descriptions and information to support customers unable to visit stores in person.
To keep up with rising demand, the shop began offering limited-edition releases, showcasing bikes and components that celebrated BMX history while incorporating modern craftsmanship. Collaborations with popular retro brands and emerging BMX designers further boosted the shop’s credibility and appeal, cementing its reputation as a go-to for all things old-school BMX.
As restrictions lifted in 2022, Craig’s Old School Bikes seized the opportunity to connect with customers in person. Craig organized and participated in pop-up events, bike shows, and BMX meetups, bringing the online community into the real world. These events allowed customers to see and test bikes firsthand, fostering an appreciation for the quality and authenticity of the shop’s offerings.
Events also brought together BMX legends, collectors, and newcomers, creating a unique space for networking and collaboration. These gatherings were often as much about storytelling and preserving BMX history as they were about sales, strengthening the shop’s image as a key player in BMX culture.
As of 2024, Craig’s Old School Bikes is exploring new ways to grow its offerings while staying true to its roots. Plans include expanding the customization services, offering a broader range of parts for different BMX styles, and collaborating with local BMX teams to host events that promote the sport. Craig’s commitment to preserving the heritage of BMX remains strong, as does the shop’s mission to provide a home for fans who seek the authenticity of BMX’s golden years.
Craig’s Old School Bikes is also exploring sustainable options, working with manufacturers who prioritize eco-friendly practices. As BMX continues to evolve, Craig aims to keep the shop relevant while staying connected to the values that launched it: community, authenticity, and a deep love for BMX.
